BNZ Newsletter May 2018

Hi all,

Please find the May Newsletter below.

Competition:

The BNZ Elite team recently returned from the CWG’s on the Gold Coast with very good results.

Congratulations to the whole team not just for the results but for mostly very good behaviour throughout the tournament. BNZ will continue with the “Nil Alcohol” policy for traveling teams until we prove to our overseeing sports bodies that we are capable of showing a mature and responsible face to our sport, this policy will be enforced indefinitely until our sport recovers from the perceived reputation the sport has gained over the years from entities such as Sport NZ and the NZOC.

My personal picks from the boxers were David Nyika for his incredible natural talent and now two gold medal performances and Patrick Mailata for good fight fit preparation and a dogged willingness to fight hard all the way. Both these boxers proved the positives from a competitive boxing lead up for international competition.

BNZ Board Meeting 10 May 2018

1.The amendments and corrections to the Annexes were adopted “In Principal” and when the final documentation is completed by the Office they will be sent out to the BNZ Member Associations to be accepted. Further documents were adopted these being:  Disputes Resolution, Procedures and Process for International Team Competitions, National Team Manager Protocols.

2. Terms of Reference adopted:

Communications/Funding/Community Development/Finance/National and International Relations/BNZ Selectors

TOR’s to be completed: High Performance/Boxer and Coach Development

3. Commonwealth Games Report:

By Mr Harry Otty Convenor HP. This report was tabled and accepted in the absence of the author.

4. General Business:

. AIBA’ Diversity in Boxing’ Funding applications. The Oceania region has been allocated $100k us for various programs. The Funding Program Manager will seek funding on behalf of BNZ from this AIBA initiative. One area for funding will be the possibility of bringing an AIBA Coaching Instructor to NZ for Star 1-2 and 3 coaching clinics, it would be the intention to make this available to all Oceania Confederation members.

. Several complaints were made regarding the HP Facebook page postings regarding the Board of BNZ and individual members of the Board. Considering the comments posted on this page representing itself as the BNZ HP official Facebook Page and administered by the former Convenor of HP, the Board has requested the Office of BNZ to write to the Page administrator and demand that it be taken down and discontinued.

BNZ Communication policy is as requested by the members is to communicate via the Official BNZ Website or the Official BNZ regular Newsletter. BNZ will not enter into trivial mudslinging via Facebook. If members have concerns they wish to be heard please contact the Office of BNZ.

5. Correspondence

. Resignation from Mr Harry Otty, Board Member BNZ was tabled in his absence and accepted by the Board of BNZ.

. From the R@J’s Association regarding the following:

All boxers and coaches need to be made aware that the rule “no book no box” also applies to Exhibition bouts.

Boxers need to be clean shaven, a registered coach must be present in the corner, head guards apply to various divisions and too many basic rules forgotten.

Also, a suggestion that perhaps a list of basic competition rules be published.

(of interest the British Board of Boxing has petitioned AIBA to relax the ban on facial hair to accommodate the Muslim content of British boxing, expressing a need to consider Religious obligations)

. Canterbury Metro sought permission to hold public sparring sessions in the Hagley Sports Centre. BNZ sees no reason for this to be declined.

. Invitation received from the Smithfield Irish Boxing Club to an International Boxing event to be held 4th -6th October 2018 Dublin Ireland. (please see BNZ Website)

Census:

Finally, we have wound up the BNZ Boxing Participant Census. (see report below)

Boxing NZ Participant Census Report

Recently Boxing NZ conducted a Census for gyms or clubs affiliated to BNZ to gather information regarding Participant numbers, the results were quite outstanding.

First of all, thank you to all members who took the time to fill out the Census. The information gathered will be of great assistance to BNZ in regards to seeking funding that will benefit all participants in the sport. This will be the first time ever we have an accurate picture of the demographics of our sport. We estimate we had a 75% participation rate, so figures are adjusted in respect to this figure.

There are approximately 57 Gyms or Boxing clubs affiliated to Boxing NZ, 623 people compete in competition.

Total Participants Non-Competition (8,421)

700 people either coach or assist with coaching, 623 Compete, 8,421 people aged from 10 – 60yrs+ partake in boxing activities in Gyms operated under BNZ Certified Coaches or under the supervision of BNZ certified Coaches. (There has been no data collated on Corporate or Professional boxers who contest under the BNZ jurisdiction).

The demands placed on our sport now encompass far more areas than just working with ‘at risk youth’ or young people. What the sport does not get recognised for is the countless thousands of other people who are deriving benefit from boxing related activities. Almost all boxing gyms and clubs affiliated to Boxing New Zealand Inc have large numbers of Non-Competition users. A total of over 9,000 people benefit directly from Coaches and Gyms that operate under the Boxing NZ Banner.

BNZ Boxing plays a huge unrecognised part in improving the health of people living in Communities of NZ. Many other fringe Gyms also contribute to this service. Some of the Categories the sport caters for are:

Over sixty Box Fit, At Risk Youth, Youth Justice and Police referrals, Oranga Tamariki, bullied children, people with learning difficulties, people with low self-esteem, people who are wheel chair bound, Diabetics, Asthma, Parkinson sufferers, Arthritic, Obese, AHD sufferers, Heart Conditions, Autistic and Mental Health sufferers.

The sport is administered by volunteer people with a very small fiscal budget that does not allow for growth or efficient administration. The Board of BNZ gather only five times a year due to the high cost and limited funds.

We need better funding in order for boxing to achieve its potential. The only guaranteed funding we receive is $20k from Sport NZ. In order to manage and grow the sport, we receive some funding from the Racing Authority via the TAB Boxing betting, this can be incremental. We need to maintain an effective Office with at least one full time staff member and possibly one part time. The costs of this alone could exceed $90k. Four regular and one Annual BNZ Board meetings cost approx. $10k for airfares and venue fees. Office administration costs including Website costs are approx $35k.This means we need at least $135k pa just to hold our ground, hopefully the Census results will be beneficial to increasing our funding platform. Sport NZ funding criteria centres on the following areas: Female, Maori, Samoan, Fijian and youth, the survey results show significant contribution by BNZ affiliated entities in these areas.

Yours, Steve H. BNZ

HP Convenor Position.

Recently the position for the Convenor of HP Boxing was advertised, two applicants applied for the position. The former Convenor of HP did not reapply.

Mr Mark Keddell has been appointed as the Convenor of HP, for people not familiar with Mark below is a brief.

Mark is a former Olympic sprinter representing NZ at the 200m at the 1996 Atlanta games. He has represented NZ in 3 different sports and was part of the Australian Institute if Sport prior to the 2000 Olympic Games.

Mark has built a large business in the hospitality area and employed over 1,000 staff.

He currently manager Jacko Gill (Olympic and world champion shot put finalist) and Joseph Millar (Commonwealth Games sprinter) More importantly managed Soulan Pounceby to No1 ranked fighter in the Light Heavy weight division by the WBO and currently manages the program for Junior Fa ranked 12th best prospect in the world by ESPN.

Mark will develop high-performance programs, directing sports scientists, mental performance coaches, nutritionists, Treatment specialists and most importantly boxing coaches as team with communication, transparency and culture. His vision for this role is to use his expertise to help athlete and coach perform at a higher level with support from various areas in HPSNZ and the NZOC.

He has many contacts in HPSNZ and will be engaging experts from this are to assist in the implementation of the HP Program.

BNZ has exercised a degree of prudence in respect the appointment of Mark Keddell.

As well as having the skills we believe are required for the HP Position Mark has many contacts in the SportNZ and the NZOC organisations, as we all know our sport has been treated indifferently by these people over the years and he will go a long way in rebuilding the credibility of our sport and offer exciting new opportunities for our athletes.

BNZ welcomes Mark to the team.
