Last Chance for Our Boxers to Qualify for Paris 2024


The New Zealand boxing team heads off to the second World Olympic Qualifiers

in Bangkok - Thailand, with a mix of experience and emerging talent.

Veterans Alex Mukuka and Wendell Stanley lead the charge, and they have competed in previous international competitions, including the Italy qualifiers and the 2024 Commonwealth Games. Their experience will be crucial in guiding the team through this crucial tournament.

One of the team's rising stars, Taj Kagho, narrowly missed qualification in Italy and is now more determined than ever to secure a spot in Paris.

Amy Hussain, a top-16 finisher at the 2018 World Championships, returns to the team and has recently been crowned the Commonwealth professional featherweight champion, having a 7-0 pro record.

Cara Wharerau, the most technical female boxer at the 2023 New Zealand National Amateur Championships, brings her exceptional skills to the team and provides a wealth of experience and leadership.  Deanne Read is making her return from previously competing at the 2016 Olympic qualification tournament.  Malcolm Matthes, a new addition to the squad, will compete in the Heavyweight category.

The second World Qualifiers are the last qualifying event for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This tournament represents the New Zealand boxers’ final opportunity to secure a spot on the world’s biggest sporting stage. The team is determined to perform at its best and make its country proud.  With a blend of experience and emerging talent, the fate of our boxers now rests on their performance in this crucial tournament.
